Docs Hyped; Pioneers of the West: Too Short & the Dangerous Crew

Docs Hyped youtube channel Before N.W.A. put Compton on the map, Todd Shaw—better known as Too $hort—was pioneering the West Coast rap scene from the streets of Oakland, California. But he didn't do it alone. In this video, we dive deep into the legendary history of The Dangerous Crew, the powerhouse collective formed by Too $hort in the late 1980s. From legendary producers like Ant Banks and Shorty B, to incredible lyricists like Spice 1, Father Dom, The conscious Daughters, and Goldy, The Dangerous Crew defined the raw, funky, and unapologetic sound of Bay Area hip-hop. We explore: How Too $hort built an independent empire selling tapes out of his trunk. The formation of The Dangerous Crew and their signature "Moby Dick" studio sessions. The sonic mastermind of Ant Banks and the birth of the Bay Area funk sound. The classic albums, the eventual breakup, and their lasting legacy on modern hip-hop. If you love classic West Coast hip-hop, 90s rap history, and the stories behind the music, smash that like button, subscribe to the channel, and hit the notification bell so you never miss an episode! Freaking Out With Billy Hume; The One Drum Sound Behind a Million Hit Songs > TR-808

Freaking Out With Billy Hume youtube channel The one drum you've heard on a million hits didn’t come from a plugin — it came from a drum machine. In this video, I tell the real story of how the kick drum from the Roland TR-808 evolved into the massive bass sound that now defines hip-hop, trap, pop and much of modern music. What started as a simple analog drum sound was re-recorded, processed, and shaped over decades into the foundation of countless hit records. Having recorded and mixed some of the biggest rap songs of the era, I show exactly how this sound was used and demonstrate a few of the technical things I did that contributed to the evolution of the 808 sound. I also talk with Mr. Collipark (the producer for the Ying Yang Twins, V.I.C., Soulja Boy, Bubba Sparxxx and others) about his early days using the 808 drums sound and his thoughts on how it became one of the most prevalent sounds in music today. This isn’t theory or internet history — it’s the studio reality behind one sound you’ve heard a million times. Once you hear it, you’ll never hear music the same way again. If you have any thoughts or opinions about this, leave a comment. In this video, we follow the unlikely journey of the cassette, from a Dutch engineer trying to make tape recording smaller and simpler, to the Bronx parties where live DJ sets were captured, copied and passed around by hand. But the cassette didn’t just document early hip-hop. In bedrooms, on family stereos and cheap tape decks, young producers discovered that the pause button could be used to trap tiny moments from records and loop them over and over again, creating rough, handmade beats before samplers became widely available. This is the story of the pause tape, and how a tiny plastic button became an entry point for future legends like Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Public Enemy, Easy Mo Bee, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, RZA and J Dilla. ⏰ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro 00:46 - The Tale of The Tape 02:47 - Live From The Boombox 04:53 - One Pause At A Time 07:30 - A Quick Interlude 08:21 - The Pause Tape Blueprint 14:01 - Still On Pause
