Docs Hyped; The Rise & Fall Of the Juice Crew & Cold Chillin
Docs Hyped youtube channel
Welcome to the definitive documentary on one of the most foundational record labels in hip-hop history: Cold Chillin' Records.
Founded by manager Tyrone "Fly Ty" Williams. Cold Chillin' was the beating heart of the late 80s and early 90s Golden Era. Serving as the primary launchpad for legendary producer Marley Marl and the iconic Juice Crew, this label gave us the blueprints for modern technical lyricism, boom-bap production, and raw New York street energy.
From legendary posse cuts and the infamous Roxanne Wars, to securing a major distribution deal with Warner Bros. and navigating the legal pitfalls of early sampling, this film unpacks how a tightly knit crew from Queensbridge and Brooklyn changed the music industry forever.
Fly Ty and Mr. Magic teamed up with producer extraordinaire Marley Marl to transition from radio dominance to pressing records.
The Roster: The rise of Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shanté, Masta Ace, and MC Shan.
The Battles: An inside look at the historic "Bridge Wars" against KRS-One's Boogie Down Productions, and the "Roxanne Wars".
The Legacy: The groundbreaking impact of "The Symphony," the pop-crossover success of Biz Markie's "Just a Friend," and the eventual business struggles that led to the label closing its doors in 1998.
"I needed a name for the label and I called Shan one day and asked what he was doin.' He said that he was 'cold chillin.' And I said, 'That's it!'" Tyrone "Fly Ty" Williams
